Comments: This is one of a number of very simple horizons with squares. As mentioned elsewhere this was not a very popular series but I found it very satisfying. In this particular image I was playing with figure and ground, two dimensions and three dimension, subtlety of proportion and color and a simple elegant formality. It is one that took very little time and yet it took a dozen other horizons before this for me to be able to make this one and I don't think I could do something like it again today. I think it is my own version of a Zen monochrome.

Note: Roma has a really nice surface texture that is almost like superfine sand paper. It is expensive (about $8 per sheet) and it takes colored pencil very well but the color shifts over time. The Roma red becomes a little more brown over time and the blues become a little gray. But, I have about 20 sheets of the stuff in storage and it is such a pleasure to use I will not give it up over a little problem like archival instability! Buyer beware! (Actually it is acid-free and pH neutral so it is an archival quality paper even if the pigment does shift. But, if you bought a work on Roma from me before the problem was made known I will give you your money back.)
