Comments: This sort of image is very rare for me. I think it is a control issue. It is hard for me to cut loose and sketch in such a rough expressionistic style. It is like zen monochromes. One works fast but if you make a mistake that happens fast too and you can wreck an image in an instant. With this one I had prepared the paper and drawn the squares some days before. Then on the day of the sketch I had spent the day walking around some of Washington state's basalt badlands. The place was deep in my mind and imagination and when I returned I picked up a white pencil and made the sketch inside the frame of squares.
